One of the main benefits of buying a franchise over starting your own business is that you’re entitled to support from your franchisor, in fact, that’s part of what you pay for when you buy into the franchise initially and what your ongoing fees contribute towards (if these are included in your franchise set up). The type and degree of this support will vary from franchise to franchise and will also depend on the maturity of the franchise business and the franchise model.
The support provided by the franchisor can be split down into two categories: initial support and ongoing support.
Initial support can take the form of helping you set up your business, providing marketing collateral and services, supplying you with an IT solution, training you, helping you to acquire premises, equipment and stock, giving you advice and guidance e.g. with your business plan, and help with setting up relevant subscriptions/memberships.
Ongoing support is often assistance with monitoring your business performance, regular visits from a representative of the franchisor, top-up training for you and training of your employees (if you have them), negotiated rates with major suppliers and marketing of the brand on a national level.
Some franchises will offer additional chargeable support services such as bookkeeping, tool purchase, production of marketing materials and marketing design work.
Below is a summary of the support offered by some of the largest pest control franchises:
Pestforce:
Initial support from Pestforce includes a marketing starter pack, help to generate franchisee’s first £5k in revenue, a fully optimised website and email account, Google Ads, a local Facebook page, vehicle livery and a branded uniform, a week on the road with another franchisee, marketing templates and business stationary, a fully automated reviews system, three weeks’ training, initial stock and materials, help with getting DBS checked, set up with public liability insurance and a health & safety package.
Pestforce’s ongoing support involves centrally generated leads, national contract work, professional training, in the field support and mentoring, help with achieving qualifications and applying for British Pest Control Association (BPCA) membership, a call tracking and answering service, an online operational system and supplier discounts, along with regular meetings with franchisees.
The Pest Company’s initial support includes on-location training, help with setting up franchisee’s businesses, providing brochures, leaflets, corporate workwear and business stationary, an initial marketing programme including website creation and optimisation and initial stock and materials, Google AdWord management and other internet advertising, setting up franchisee’s CRM systems and other software licenses, sourcing and branding a van and supplying a freephone number.
Ongoing support from the Pest Company involves professional guidance and advice, a dedicated point of contact at Head Office, one-to-one visits to franchisees in their territories and providing business development recommendations, provision of marketing ideas, franchise network meetings, analysis of KPIs and advice on how to improve performance, supply of stationary, marketing and promotional materials (at cost), industry research and a franchisee ‘help-desk’ for advice and guidance.
Initial support from Whelan includes 10 days’ training, a sign written and kitted out van, an equipment and chemicals package, branded workwear, a safety gear package, a stationary and sales literature start-up kit, a dedicated web presence, email and a marketing launch.
Whelan’s ongoing support includes training and back-up/advice from Head Office.
PGH Beegone has tried to put together as comprehensive a support system as possible in order to maximise franchisee value for money.
Our initial support package includes a starter marketing collateral bundle, such as leaflets, folders, business cards, compliments slips, branded clothing and vehicle branding. We do all local marketing for you for the first six months to get you established in your area and earning money, incorporating both online and offline campaigns across a range of mediums.
We provide a complete IT solution to get you up and running as soon as your business is launched – this involves bespoke Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software, a subscription to the Xero accountancy platform and an advanced online quoting system. All handed to you installed and ready to go, along with Microsoft Office, on a brand new laptop (also included in the fees) with your first year’s use covered in the costs.
Our turnkey package also comes with one year’s membership of a couple of relevant industry bodies – the BPCA and a health & safety advisory service – all arranged on our your behalf.
The final inclusion on the initial support front is a detailed 12/13 day classroom training programme utilising both in-house and external presenters. This is supplemented with further days of practical training (shadowing our technicians in the field and also being shadowed yourself) and external training which we will help you to book on for. You will also get your own copies of our Training and Operations manuals as a handy reference point whenever you need them.
