What are the best Covid-resistant franchises?

Covid has certainly changed the commercial landscape for many and forced the closure of thousands of businesses – despite a huge degree of government help. A survey from King’s Business School suggests that up to six million small businesses are in a ‘precarious’ position after the past year, and 16 million jobs are also uncertain.

However, although many jobs and businesses are feeling the strain after a year of lockdown, there has been a spike in new business registrations at Companies House, as would-be entrepreneurs have decided to take the plunge and progress their dreams of owning their own business.

Starting a new business after Covid

It will always feel nerve-wracking to start a new business, but there are some industries that tend to be robust whatever stage the economic cycle is in – and franchises in these sectors are well-placed to weather the storm. Those being tipped for success include:

1. Senior care and home care
2. Commercial cleaning and restoration
3. Trade services
4. Junk removal and haulage
5. Home services – including pest removal and cleaning
6. Delivery services
7. Consulting
8. Property management

When you consider the lockdown restrictions of the past year, the prominence of these sectors makes sense. Many homeowners are looking to sell – and those looking to stay will be keen to do major renovations and big clear-outs.  Businesses with premises which have been sat largely untouched for months will require a spruce up before employees can return. Longer-term retail trend predictions suggest we will be buying products such as food from companies who deliver for some time yet, as consumers build up the confidence – and desire – to return to the high street.

Why consider the pest control industry?

If you’re considering a new franchise, then it’s worth looking more closely at home services. These franchises tend to be affordable and have low barriers to entry – such as reasonable investment and no requirement for prior experience. Compare this to franchises in consulting, for example, which require you to have a relevant background and significant experience in order to be successful, or large fast-food brands which require substantial investment to buy in and get your business off the ground.

The pest control industry is growing and remains highly recession-proof. After all, there will always be pests and the need to safely and effectively eliminate them from homes, businesses and other areas in which they pose a hazard to human health. As a result of this, pest controllers are actually classed as key workers.

The industry was once dominated by big players such as Rentokil, but it has greatly diversified in recent years as smaller franchised brands have built up a superb reputation in the market and brought more competition to the sector – something that benefits the market and customers alike. Because the pest control industry tends to be localised for speedy responses to customer needs, there is huge scope to grow a profitable local business with a successful franchise in your own exclusive territory.
