Do you need industry experience to run a franchise?

One of the most common questions heard from prospective franchisees is “do I need previous industry experience to operate this franchise?” The answer depends very much on the franchise you choose.

Franchises requiring limited experience

There are franchises that are suitable for people with little to no experience. For example, smaller-scale franchises that can be operated part-time around other commitments and with a minimal level of upfront investment.  Of course, some franchises will require industry experience, especially ones where qualifications are required in order to trade, but franchisors may prefer that you do not have any industry experience as they will want to train you from scratch.

Examples of franchises that do not need any prior experience:

Bright & Beautiful

Minimum investment required: £9,995

Total investment: £19,995

This is a successful domestic cleaning franchise. You do not need to clean or iron yourself, but you do need an eye for detail and a passion for excellent service. This business can be expected to provide a substantial income while fitting around family life as it can be run in the comfort of your own home.

EweMove

Total investment: Not stated

The EweMove franchise is an award winning Estate Agency business. To be a successful franchisee you don’t need any previous property experience. You do need a ‘can do’ attitude and, for people who are willing to work hard, EweMove can be a very profitable business venture.

Franchises requiring more experience

High investment franchises often recommend that franchisees have experience because of their size, scale and the level of investment required but generally most franchises will provide some sort of training programme to allow you to develop the necessary skills to build your business.

However, high investment franchises also come with a higher level of risk. Meaning, they are best suited to experienced entrepreneurs with enough funds not only to cover the initial business start-up cost, but also working capital as the unit becomes established.

Here are some of the best high investment franchise opportunities in the UK right now:

Café Rouge

Minimum investment required: £375,000

Total investment: £750,000

Café Rouge is a French casual dining brand which has established more than 90 sites across the country and, since it was founded in 1989, has become a firm favourite among many UK diners.

If you want to become a Café Rouge franchisee, to qualify, you’ll need experience of running a casual dining outlet, preferably with a practical understanding of business growth in Europe.

Dunkin’ Donuts

Minimum investment required: £1.2m

Total investment: £3m

Specialising in coffee and doughnuts, this franchise serves over five million customers a day and sells over 30 cups of coffee per second.

The business was launched in 1950 by Bill Rosenburg, who opened his first shop in Massachusetts. Since then, Dunkin’ Donuts has established a network of over 11,000 stores across 31 countries.

If you want to become a Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee you’ll need experience in the food and drinks industry. You should also be prepared to develop a business portfolio and open at least 20 restaurants over a given time period.

Do I need experience to run a pest control franchise?

The good news is that most pest control franchises, such as PestForce (https://pestforcefranchise.co.uk/, RentoKil (https://www.rentokil-initial.com/), the Pest Company (https://www.thepestcompany.com/pest-control-franchise-opportunities/) and PGH Beegone do not require prior experience to become a franchisee within their system. This is because they provide all of the necessary training and carry out a careful selection process to ensure that they are offering territory licenses to franchisees with the necessary attributes to succeed in the industry.

While there is no need to have any prior experience in live bee removal or pest control to run a PGH Beegone franchise, for maximum ROI we suggest our franchise model is best suited to someone who is happy to throw themselves into this business full time, in contrast to some of the franchises referenced earlier in this article.

In many cases with a franchise, a willingness to learn, work hard, develop new skills and be flexible are the ingredients that will help you to build a successful franchise. Prior experience is useful, but many franchisees find that they have plenty of transferable skills that they hadn’t even considered to be relevant before they began to apply them within their new business. Most franchises will look for the right attitude, enthusiasm, passion, drive and commitment to learn and apply a proven system as signs of likely success – rather than prior qualifications or a relevant background.

Why industry experience doesn’t always matter

One of the biggest keys to success with a franchise doesn’t include industry experience at all. It simply requires following the franchise system precisely in the way you will be taught and use of all the tools and techniques that are provided to you as a franchisee. Successful franchisees learn very quickly they need to follow the system because that is exactly what they are buying into – a proven business model which works.

If you commit to taking on board the lessons of the system and following it in the way that you are taught in your training, you will have a strong chance of success – wherever your previous experience lies.
